:bulletwhite: On the topic of Daily Deviations :bulletwhite:

I like the idea behind Daily Deviations, featuring a new set of artists and their work every day by putting them in the spotlight of deviantART's footer is a great way to spread their work to others. The system by which they are selected I believe is not perfect as too often I see the same ^Community Volunteer selecting a featured piece of work without a suggestion for days on end. So obviously, there are some things that need fixing.

Most obviously, deviantART portrays its most highly regarded feature as an award, which confuses and irritates the hell out of many members. Before you continue, I ask that you favorite this journal and I will FEATURE your work, not give it an award.

I've always been aware of the trolling, jealous and upset commenters on works where the masses have decided it is not worthy or deserving of a Daily Deviation. To them, they have worked hard and seen others work toward a DD, so why should someone else's pile of crap be featured? I show you exhibit A in which DragonLover4Ever says:

This is a nice picture and all, but I really don't think it's deserving
of a Daily Deviation... :\ There is art that is MUCH more interesting
than this, and they're not even LOOKED at by the people who give out
DDs. I don't like the whole, "Everyone is a winner" bullshit; if I am
going to get a daily deviation, I'd WORK for it.

*Ahem* Sorry, but this is just my opinion.

First off, there are several things logistically wrong with this statement, and they are:
:bulletwhite: The person thinks that a DD is an award, not a feature, and shows no clear understanding of the two.
:bulletwhite: "art more interesting than this"-- what they're implying here is that they do not find the above art as interesting and that other art chosen by the ^CV's hasn't interested them.
:bulletwhite: "'Everyone is a winner' bullshit"-- Confirmation that the person has no clear concept of what the eff a feature is.

:bulletwhite: Clarifications :bulletwhite:

An award is something that is worked toward, like an achievement, except an achievement can be done on one's own. An award however, is given by a third-party because of work you directly put forth. Sometimes there is voting or judging involved.

Award Keywords: work towards, given by a third-party, you have direct input, voting, judging.

A feature is something that cannot be worked towards, is given by a third party, however, you have no direct influence or control over what is being featured. There is no voting or judging involved.

Feature Keywords: cannot be worked towards, given by a third party, have no direct influence or control, no voting, judging

But Sinobali says
if DD is a feature..and not an award
they why do I even work so hard
trying to achieve it... I think just that the feeling of bein noticed or
even glanced makes an artist feel humbled and proud, but now i
ponder....why ? why do i even want DD if it doesnt mean anything...just
another feature in DA

I'm sorry you're wasting your time trying to achieve something you receive indirectly. Your input towards receiving a feature is usually nada, other than possibly arranging it. Again, you're thinking of a DD as an award, not a feature-- you can't work towards a feature, you can work towards an award. For Example:

Award: Nobel Peace Prize, MacArthur Grant, Bridport Prize
Feature: Tonight on The [_____] Show, An Interview with [__________],

:bulletwhite: See what I'm getting at? :bulletwhite:

So please, spread this journal, and maybe deviantART $$$taff will see it and stop treating a feature like it is an award, and others will treat it as it is.

Actually, I have seen dA $taff repeatedly remind the community that DDs are not awards. They are features. I think the wording on the deviation badges ("given" rather than "featured") could be changed to be more obvious that a DD is just a feature. But I have never seen a $taff or a ^CV claim that a DD is something that can be won or worked towards.

That's why FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature? exists. People have no say in whether or not they get a DD feature, so it is absolutely pointless to complain about the feature on the art that is DD'ed.
