When a literature deviation has an outside quote before the actual text from the author, how often do you feel the quote added something to the piece of literature or affected how you read into the piece?

On occasion, I will include an outside quote in the Author's comments section (not before the piece) so to follow the work in question. And, I must admit that since I enjoy esoteric allusions and references, it ends up being more for my enjoyment than others.

I do not use quotes frivolously...I think that they can suggest a tone...like playing a note on a piano to find the right key for a performance.

Also, I would occasionally preface a poem with a short stanza of my own. I chose to do that for illustrative purposes; the stanza was a primer to initiate the composing of the piece, brainstorming if you will, and I wanted to include that with the poem.

Hopefully it was never regarded as pretentious. As with all art, there is the interplay of artistic license, good taste, and subjective interpretation on the part of both artist and audience. Sometimes there are clashes.
