I think there is a point where the 'rules' are no longer to protect the journalists, but to protect the people who are in control. ElectricQuill makes a really good point about the balance between privacy and the right to information, but I think it does tend to go to other way.

Even in not-as-censored countries, news can be creative truth telling. As more news stations are owned by the same people the ability to crosscheck things fades. Technically they as stations are within their rights to report what they want, it's just to keep your job at any one of them there has to be a certain slant in the reporting. It all makes me very nervous.
