I returned to this suggestion recently and forgot to update the deviation when I completed the mockup. So this is suggestion in its newest form. I feel it is at its most self-explanatory in this version, but the only thing I hesitate about is selecting colors for the calendar. While this works, it may appear cluttered if used too much. I also updated the image because I wanted to represent the new symbols on the deviation itself.
Again, thanks for supporting this idea so much, but I'm always looking to upgrade and revise my dA suggestions to better showcase what the community wants, so if you have any suggestions for this mockup to show off, do tell! If you have any questions as to how this widget would potentially work, just ask; I've worked on this enough to know the ins and outs that may not appear as obvious
- an 'add event to your calendar' button
- A pop-up window which display users that are attending the event, like the 'who fav'd' stat on deviations
- A 'similar events' which displays events like the one selected
- A message center notification that tells your watchers about events you are attending and have added to your calendar
- Options to sort the events, such as by timeframe, type, number of people attending, etc

I think this is a great suggestion that would help groups a lot. Easier ways to organise and announce events and generally, better ways to communicate with members, have been asked for a lot by the community, particularly for super groups. I think it would make sense as a super group feature considering that it's not vital but very helpful for the super active groups, and given the complaints you see sometimes that supergroups still lack such features.
Editing & Adding Events Interface - I'm a bit confused by the suggestion for the editing screen though. As a user I'd wonder, would clicking "+ Add Event" open the two input boxes under it, or would it save their content? (In the latter case I'd wonder why it's above them rather than under them?)
I think it would make more sense to have separate "Add" (+) and "Edit" (pencil) buttons, much like on the Commissions widget. The Pencil button would let you edit settings (so far, just whatever you had in mind for "Additional Options"), and edit or remove individual events.
The Add button would let you add an event with an Event Title, Link. In the case of Livestreams, Chat events and the like an extra "Location Link" aside the "Details Link" might be useful. This might be confusing though when there's two links, so it might be better to pick one of the two, so it will either say "Details" or "Join here" or so.
While adding/editing I'd also suggest more specific Date/Time options. Many events run on for more than one day so the ability to pick both a Begin Date (and time) and an End Date (and time) would be beneficial.
Additionally, many events start (and end) at a certain time, and on the day itself it'd be very useful to see if it's started or ended already.
I was going to add timezone options, but thinking that over I don't think it's necessary as everyone has their own timezone in their settings anyway.
Visitors view - Visibility
This brings me to the next thing: For the random member checking it, it would be most useful to focus on "what's new" rather than an overview of all month, requiring everyone to look it up each time. I think your suggestion should be part of the view, but with an area above it that shows all that's going on today, or the next event.
(For example, it could say
"Upcoming: Contest X, in 1 week"
- chat event in #chatroom until 9pm
- Contest X, until 31 August"
above the calendar you designed. That would arguably replace the Countdown widget - if it did, I'm sure it'd be a welcome upgrade)
Visitor's view - Control & Consistency
The way you presented it, the name of the widget is the name of the month and year, presumably changing each month and then showing the next month instead. I think instead, the name of the widget should be "Events Calendar", and the widget should let you browse forwards and backwards to other months as well. It would be more consistent with other widgets as well as with other calendars outside dA and you'd leave control to the visitor.
Lastly, messages to the message center of group members / watchers would be very useful, ideally somewhere (a day to an hour) in advance and with the link to the location. For long events (like many contests) it could also notify of the approaching end (deadline). I think people would love to know about it right when it's relevant, and thus notifying people at the right time also makes the events more successful so I'm sure groups would love it too.
In summary this is a great suggestion that would make group owners very happy, and I think a few changes could make it even better.
I hope this helps in case you want to revise it! Otherwise I hope it helps you in any future suggestions you make... and that staff will see this critique as well as the deviation
A con I see from this right off the bat is why is there a +Add Event button? If you click on the date and then are able to add the Event Title, as well as the link to the event details, then what is that button's purpose? In my opinion I think if you just take out that button then I think this would be less confusing to me, unless you had an actual reason for this button.
Another possible con I can see is that you can only add the date, title, and link. I think it'd be beneficial if you could also add the time; let's say you had a livestream or a join.me planned for that day and had it planned for a certain time. I think times like this would be helpful. In addition, if a contest ended on that day and you had a specific time that's another instance where this would be helpful.
Another thing I would suggest is to maybe be able to color coordinate the days, so if you had an important date, and a lot of events planned for that month, people could clearly see what date/event was most important, instead of looking at this green-gray color and just seeing a wall of text staring back at them.
Two rather small things that I think would also help would be a button to clear events; and to have the option to possibly clear all events that day, week, month, or year. In addition, instead of just adding events, maybe people could also add dates like an anniversary, or just overall an important date.
The last thing I'd have to say is the fact that obviously, people don't check the profiles of people who they're watching that much, or groups that they're watching. So I'd say that it'd be best if they got notifications in their inbox (but could always turn this feature off by editing their watch for the person/group) whenever a new event was added, or updated, so that people were aware.
Overall I really like this concept and I hope that it can be implemented because it sounds like a really good idea! I hoped that this helped you c:>

Should the calendar display days ONLY with events No; I'd prefer it have all days, I like to see the amount of time before/between etc.

That aside; I think it would be cool if we could add personal ones [i.e. if I'm planning to write an article; have a reminder on there that is private so only I know about it, but I can still see it.

I want this! I've been using google calendars for pretty much the same thing,
but this would be awesome! to have my dA calendar actually on dA as well as have other people to use it with. google calendars by myself is lonely

Then under it a list of related events. Or if you click on the event it shows more like it in that?
For example: I'm holding a contest and I made a calendar for it. Someone adds the event to their calendar as well. When you click on the event, it shows more like it, sort of like the "more like this" only more [active] events similar.
The calendar could add tags like [literature] [contest] and things tagged as that would show up?
Does that make sense
For example if I did a flower photography contest, I'd put an photo of a flower and that would be the display?
Sort of like how dA used to have the images for writing, the thumb would be of the image.??
Why is it the people who run this site can't come up with awesome ideas like this? I really hope this becomes a reality!
